Student Absences

Contact the school by phone at 403-932-5177 prior to 8:30 am to indicate the reason for the absence.

Absence Procedures

The School Act states that students must be punctual in their attendance at school. In the event of an absence please notify the school office that your child will be away.

Parents of students for Cochrane Christian Academy K-8 need to contact the school by phone at 403-932-5177 prior to 8:30 am to indicate the reason for the absence.

The school answering machine automatically takes messages from 3:15 pm until 8:00 am on Monday to Thursday and after 2:45 pm on Fridays.

  • When leaving a message, parents should leave the following information: their name, their child’s full name, grade, homeroom and the reason for the absence. In the event of a medical or dental appointment, a note should be sent in advance so the student can be released from class.
  • When K-4 students are absent without a parent phone call, the school will attempt to contact parents at the time of morning attendance. This safety measure is particularly important for students who walk to school on their own. Grade five through eight CCA students who are absent without a phone call will receive an automated telephone message from the school that evening.
  • As attendance is very critical to student learning, students on planned extended absences of 3 or more days from school are expected to contact the school.
  • When students are absent without a parent phone call, the school will attempt to contact parents by way of an automated telephone message that evening. Students are responsible for work missed due to absence. Students and parents should check the teachers’ pages on the Mitford website for missed assignments.

Lates

Please ensure that when a student is late for school that he/she enters via the front doors, removes their outdoor footwear and proceeds directly to their classroom. Please ensure that he/she notifies the teacher so that their absent attendance code is changed to late.  If too many late arrivals are recorded over a period of time:

The homeroom teacher will discuss late arrivals with parents and may assign consequences. If late arrivals continue to be chronic, a referral to administration will take place. The student may be placed on a late plan which may include:
- detentions
- parent meetings
- special assignments
- other measures

Leaving the School Premises

Students may leave the school premises during the day if at least one of the following criteria is met:

  • a phone call or note is issued by the parents
  • a parent or a designated adult has ‘signed’ the student out at the office during school hours.
  • a note has been provided for a medical appointment, etc.
